Masonry in Raleigh since 1965
Johnny M (Mackie) Whitman started Whitman Masonry in 1965 on his 21st birthday in Benson, NC. The company performed residential masonry in its early years in Wake and Johnston County, evolving into commercial work in the 1980’s. Mackie’s Dad, his two brothers, one son and one grandson have all worked over the years for the company with his brother Donnie (45 years), son Connie (35 years) and grandson Troy (13 years) still working with the company (years employed by company shown in parentheses).
Mackie sold half of the company in 1990 to Doug Burton. Doug is a civil engineering graduate from Virginia Military Institute (VMI) and worked in the concrete block business with Solite upon graduation in 1980 and then with Snow Jr & King, a Norfolk Va based masonry contractor, until the opportunity to join Whitman arose in 1990. Doug and Mackie grew the company from 14 employees to an average size of 50 - 75, depending on the work load, working a geographic area from Chapel Hill to Fayetteville. Upon Mackie’s retirement after 43 years in 2008, Doug purchased the other half of the company, which has continued to self perform lump sum masonry work in the greater Triangle area.
The company is bondable. Review the list of clients to see that we continue to work for the who’s who of construction in the Triangle. The company relocated its office to Raleigh in May 2013.
